Does Cold Email Still Work In 2024?

Recently a few people have been asking me about whether cold email is still good or not.

Here’s the run down.

  1. Anyone who says it hasn’t gotten harder to succeed with cold email is capping

  2. Anyone who says it’s now impossible to succeed with cold email is capping

→ People that are too far to either side of the spectrum are wrong.

Yes, it has become more difficult, but yes, it still works.

My recommendation is that if you are good at it, you should keep running it.

If you can’t afford to run ads, you should also keep running it.

But I wouldn’t be starting with cold email or relying on it too much these days, just because it gets harder and more difficult every year. If you’ve already invested heavily into learning it, it’s worth continuing, but not worth starting as a new thing.

Cold email is best used as a supplement to the full marketing funnel.

It is one of those classic situations where so many people have flooded towards the mechanism that it’s become more difficult, and the original ‘arbitrage’ that was available is no longer there.

It still works, just not at a crazy efficiency like it used to.

If you are a more established business, I would put a team member on it and have it running because it’s just easy, but I would focus more of my effort towards paid ads and content, that is where the big money is.

Maybe in a few months once most people have been scared away from cold email, it will be a huge opportunity to go back there, but for now we are seeing people dominate with paid ad funnels like this one.

If you are still running cold email, I would think of more creative angles and niches to pursue because in the typical industries (eCom, Saas, Agencies) it is super competitive.

Either way though, it still works, you just have to be better.

Or you can just focus on other acquisition channels.
