What I would do if I had to restart today
I got a DM the other day from a guy I know in the space.
He’s had some projects finish up, and he wanted to know what I would do if I had a clean slate to restart.
To be honest, it’s a pretty easy question.
First things first, if you are skilled, you want most of your focus to be on growing the vessel you hold equity in.
AKA - growing your business. Your time as the founder should not be spent doing too much for clients.
The best way to do this is to build a business/offer that is focused on one specific area or KPI that you can become the best at.
Especially when you’re building from the ground up.
So the growth partner-y stuff is out.
Coaching/consulting is ok, but you need a crazy track record like Matt or some type of unique edge for it to work well.
Plus, if you are young, going full guru is not that smart.
The other options are eCom or Saas, but both of those are completely different skillsets, require capital and capital efficiency that I don’t know how to do, and they also aren’t that good for cashflow.
Saas and eCom seem like the ‘long term play’ but really that’s just because you see people selling those types of businesses more often.
Really the long term play is getting insanely skilled in one vehicle and not changing.
So if I was restarting today, I would focus on selling a productised service like email marketing, FaceBook Ads, or Google Ads.
There is nothing that comes close to the cashflow + exit potential of an agency.
Is it the complete blue ocean that it was a decade ago?
No.
Is it still the simplest way to make money?
Yes.
You can scale an agency as big as you want. It’s been proven time and time again.
It’s not ‘just a cashflow vehicle before your next thing’ it’s THE cashflow vehicle.
The only reason you don’t see many people exit their agency is because most agencies aren’t worth owning. The founder gets stuck in operations, they barely have any profit margin, and they hate their clients.
They have no leverage.
If you don’t have the right set up with your agency, it simply will not work and it will suck.
This is why most people either pivot or quit too early.
100% transparently, it will suck if you do it wrong.
I guarantee you.
If you want to know how to grow an agency the right way, watch this video.
It outlines:
How to get more leverage
How to set up your day for success
What to focus on
How to setup your offer so it actually works
How to build your funnel properly
And much more.
Hands down, it is one of the best videos I’ve ever made, and it is the only thing you should spend your time on for the rest of the day.
