The Risks Of Scaling Past $200,000/mo
I’ve been in the space for a few years.
Made some decent money, met a lot of people, and learned a tonne.
In that process, I have learned that one of the biggest risks is to allow your beliefs, values and behaviours to be moulded too strongly by the people you look up to in the industry.
For example, it’s easy to see Hormozi say “morning routines suck” and then never do one again.
However, in that process, you might give up something you enjoy for absolutely no reason other than you heard it from someone you respect.
It’s kind of just a microcosm of the entire ‘red pill’ space, except it seems more acceptable because it’s Hormozi and not some 45 yo from Miami.
What I mean is:
You hear something from someone.
They have something you want, so you take it as a fact.
You then move through the world completely differently with zero basis for doing so.
Trust me when I say that you must remove this tendency over a long enough time period.
Yes - listen to people ahead of you.
Yes - don’t become arrogant and think you know everything.
And yes - avoid making silly mistakes by rejecting advice.
But - do not mould your beliefs, values and behaviours on things that are incongruent with your own experience.
Another good example of this is thinking that high level founders are all super direct, harsh and kind of rude to their employees.
You think this because you heard someone say it once, then you become a terrible manager and never know why.
In reality, the small percentage of dickhead founders who make it are just the vocal minority.
→ There aren’t many of them, but the ones who exist are very prominent, which makes you think there are more than there actually are.
The only way to avoid this is to really focus on filtering your information diet, and only get advice from people who’s values are in alignment with yours.
For example, if you work with someone who is low integrity, their tendency to screw over clients or shit talk employees just leaks over and infects you.
If you respect that person a lot, you are about 100x more likely to slightly mirror their traits.
You must avoid this.
Action Item:
Write down the kind of business owner you want to be
Think of 2-3 people who embody the same values as you
Consume more of their stuff, and less of the others
Ciao.
