Skills you need as a business owner in 2024

The other day someone asked me:

“What are the best skills I should work on as a business owner?”

My answer:

There is a lot of different stuff you could focus on.

And the truth is that it depends on your business and where it’s at.

For example, you might be someone who is naturally really good at content, but isn’t great at operations.

This means you might get leads, but suck at fulfilling.

In that case, it wouldn’t make sense for you to listen to advice on the internet that says “sales is the best skill” or “copywriting is the best skill.” You would need to focus on the skill of operations.

The best skill to focus on is the one that is going to help your business the most in the current moment and future.

That means you need to learn how to prioritise and make decisions for yourself, because a YouTuber can’t analyse your business and make decisions for you.

In saying that, if there was going to be a list of skills to focus on, here are some that come to mind:

  • Judgement and decision making

  • Planning

  • Focus

  • The skill of learning

The reason I like these is because it solves the problem of not having other skills.

For example if you can learn quickly, you can pick up any skill pretty fast, and all you really need to be good at is learning + decision making.
