The Truth About Dubai
For the last week or so, I have been in Dubai checking out the city a bit and just seeing how it is.
Obviously lots of people talk about it online as the ‘hub of the future’ and things of that nature so I thought it’s worth a look.
The first few days I just stayed in my hotel and worked because it was too hot, then on the fourth day I decided I would just look around anyway.
It’s like 35-40º celsius here lol.
In terms of if it’s worth visiting/living here:
It’s ok. I wouldn’t say it is a better quality of life than a nice place in Europe, Australia, or a big city in the US.
But - to be fair - it does have everything you need at the click of a button and services are typically very accessible.
Misconception #1: It’s Expensive
It is actually not that expensive.
Depending on where you go, it is not that much more expensive than any big city.
People seem to think it’s this massive central for flexing and things of that nature, but if you just do normal stuff it’s not that bad.
Obviously you can go bezerk and spend $$$ if you want, but it’s not like you’re forced into it. You could live here spending $7-8k/mo no problem.
Misconception #2: Everyone here is rich.
I would say Dubai is like Bali except if it was made by a guy who wanted it to be like a playground for his mates.
What I mean by that is - there are a lot of locals here who are service workers who are very nice and similar to what you’d see in Bali/Thailand in how willing they are to help you out.
From what I’ve seen the locals have been super nice.
But - there are also very many poor people here. Maybe I’m staying in the wrong place (the Marina) but it seems like a good mix between economic status.
Misconception #3: Motivation
I swear as soon as you get off the plane in Dubai, you are almost forced to say something like:
“Wow look at all the wealth here! So motivating!”
But to be honest I think that is just cope, and more of a placebo effect because you expect to feel that way.
I would look at Dubai just as a central place to meet up with international friends, indulge in some luxury, and work.
If you had a small group of friends here in the same area, it would def be worth checking out or coming here every now and then to lock in.
The timezone is great too. Much better than Aus.
All in all, I like Dubai and will be back.
Just wanted to give my review here for people thinking of going.
