The worst thing you can do when signing a client
The absolute worst thing you can do when you sign a client…
Is wait three days to do anything, have a bunch of information for the onboarding call that could have been delivered on loom, and wait two weeks to get any tangible work done.
I guarantee you, within 48-72 hours, the client is thinking:
“Damn these guys are amateur”
I know this because I have been on both sides.
I’ve been the guy with the slow onboarding, and I’ve been the guy who paid the guy with the slow onboarding.
Here is the issue:
When someone pays you, it’s not because they like you.
It’s because they want their problem solved.
And if they want their problem solved, they want it done quickly.
The same way I want my Uber Eats to get here in 15 minutes.
When you have a slow onboarding, it’s the equivalent of your Uber Eats taking two hours:
You will probably eat something else
You will probably never order from that store again
You’re probably annoyed enough to tell your friends your bad experience
Compare that to an A+++ meal arriving in 10 minutes:
You love them for being quick
You will order there every time you get hungry
You will tell your friends about how fast they were
It’s the same thing with onboarding.
That doesn’t mean you have to add a bunch of revenue or get them leads in two days.
It might just be delivering wins as fast as possible so the client can feel like the problem is getting solved and they can close the loop in their heads.
Delivering ad creatives within a few days
Lead lists ready to go within hours of signing the client
Email copy done within 24 hours of signing (before onboarding call)
Full plan ready for the onboarding call
If you do these sorts of things, you immediately stand out, which gets you more reviews and more referrals.
And another thing, make sure your process is simple and step by step.
If it’s complex, it is bad.
If it’s simple, it is most likely good.
Simple is better.
One document that goes over the next steps + welcome video is the easiest.
Redirect the client to an onboarding page after they pay/sign the contract.
That page should send them to Slack + give them some light info and welcome.
Once they’re in Slack, deliver some value asap and set the expectation with your team that you want to deliver 2-3 quick wins within a few hours of signing a client.
This only requires hustle. There is nothing else to it.
Anyone can implement this and immediately 2x their client experience.
We custom make these processes for clients inside 1000x Leads to optimise for up-sells, and it is an absolute game changer.
So make sure to get it done.
